Richard Malek, PE, CIH, CSP, Founder and Principal, has nearly 30 years of diverse experience in fire protection engineering, property loss prevention, industrial hygiene and safety, and municipal and industrial emergency services. Mr. Malek is a licensed Professional Engineer in New York, a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a Certified Safety Professional. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and master’s degrees in Fire Protection Engineering and Industrial Hygiene and Safety.
Mr. Malek’s considerable facility and industrial experience includes site and corporate-level positions in both technical and managerial/leadership roles with corporations such as the Eastman Kodak Company, IBM, and Champion International Corporation (acquired by international Paper Company), all with extensive multi-location operations. He has supported a wide range of sites from single facility operations to large industrial, manufacturing, and R&D complexes with total insured values in excess of $10 billion.
Mr. Malek’s diverse occupancy background includes research and development laboratories, high tech manufacturing including semiconductor fabrication and other clean room operations, heavy industrial manufacturing, chemical processing, hazardous materials operations and storage, power generation, large scale warehousing, and a wide range of business occupancies. Mr. Malek’s experience includes significant interfaces with both internal and external stakeholders including corporate risk managers and business unit leaders, property insurers such as FM Global®, local building and fire code officials, and OSHA compliance inspection personnel.
Mr. Malek’s municipal fire service background includes time as both a firefighter and EMT. He began his fire service career in 1986 with the City of Ithaca Fire Department in Ithaca, NY, whose response area includes Cornell University and Ithaca College. Mr. Malek went on to spend 25 years as a volunteer firefighter in the municipal fire service sector.
In the industrial emergency services sector, Mr. Malek has served as an interior structural/advanced exterior industrial firefighter, fire chief/emergency response team manager, and has technically advised multiple industrial fire departments and brigades. In his managerial capacity, Mr. Malek was responsible for firefighting, hazmat, technical rescue, and EMS response for a large heavy industrial manufacturing and chemical processing facility. His key responsibilities included emergency operations and staffing, equipment procurement and maintenance, training and certifications, and coordination with mutual aid municipal fire departments and EMS response agencies. Mr. Malek’s successful tenure was based on a commitment to delivering efficient and effective emergency services, maintaining a focus on emergency responder safety and health, and developing productive relationships with local response agencies.
